Because KDUVfm's Joe Croft is a lifelong resident of the Valley, he's told me stories of hiking through the mountains and coming within feet of bears. I told him I didn't know what I'd do if I stumbled upon one.
Well, now I do.
My family and I spent Friday driving General's Highway in the mountains. We lunched at Crescent Meadow and hiked down to the meadow bottom. As we were walking back to our car, my wife said "Man, I'd love to see a bear" and not two seconds after those magical words were uttered out of her mouth, we heard a rustling to our left. About 30 yards away was a bear trouncing on top of a log searching for food.
It was like my wife literally spoke that bear into existence.
At the time, I was holding Linny's hand. When I laid eyes on that bear, I squeezed her hand in fear, let go, wrapped my arms around my son (who was riding in a baby pack in front of me) and quickly walked toward the parking lot. I was warning everyone who walked past me. Linny stayed behind a snapped a couple pictures.
Kinda makes me wonder what I would've done if the bear started coming closer. But I don't want to ever think about that. Maybe next time, I'll just ask Linny not to talk.
Have you ever had wildlife get too close for comfort?
