This blogpost is about a month and a half in the making. I promised a friend I'd write a few words about and boy, do I suck at promises or what?
If you look down my blog, you'll see I haven't post much in the past few months other than a video here and there.
After we moved to Central California early this year, Dave Matthews Band released their summer tour schedule and Linny and I were surprised to see a stop at the Save Mart Center. We thought we were going to have to travel the Bay Area or L.A. to see them. As the summer progressed, we found we weren't going to be able to afford the concert at the time and so my friend, Scott, spotted us some cash until we were able to pay him back.
And we were very grateful.
Richmond, Va-native Jason Mraz open the show and I was surprised at how much fun he seemed to be having on stage. What gave his music the extra punch that night was the addition of Grooveline, a horn section of 3 or 4 guys ... and the highlight of the night was when Grooveline joined Dave later in the evening to perform a few songs.
The set list from the night was comprised mostly of song from Big Whiskey & the Groogrux King ... which if you don't have, is arguably the best album they've released since their debut. The album just drips with funk and attitude and is an amazing tribute to the late Leroi Moore.
Jeff Coffin proved during #41 why he's filling in for Leroi after his passing last summer. The sax/drum duet with Jeff and Carter was, in one word, sick.
Whenever Linny and I go to a concert, we always find a moment in the show to kinda sink ourselves into together ... and that came during the performance of You & Me, which also happens to be Dave's current single. You & Me and sort of become a summer love anthem for Linny and me and we were glad they included it.
By the end of the night, Dave had worn straight through his voice. Their next show was a couple days later in Salt Lake City and they had to cancel that show because of his vocal problems.
Huge thanks to Scott for making the DMB concert in Fresno one of the highlights of our summer. Getting away to spend time with Linny without the kiddo was refreshing. DMB always puts on a great performance.
Next up: U2 at the Rose Bowl next Sunday night!!
